Art & AI Policy

When artificial intelligence (AI) is used by doctors to help them spot early stages of cancer in their patients, then this is an exciting use of modern technology. However, when it’s used in a way that replaces human artists from creative careers, while those artists are seeing their work stolen to help train AI… not so much.
Art, by its very nature, is a human pouring themselves into a piece and trying to communicate something to whoever sees their work. Art is an expression of humanity, and because AI isn’t human, what it generates isn’t art. We think art matters, the definition of art matters, and artists matter. It’s not lost on us that Clashables is a game that uses a simple, fun, cartoon-ish style, but this doesn’t make the art meaningless. There’s still a human behind it all, trying to express something, and this is something we want to protect.
At Clashables, our policy on AI tools being used to generate art, content, or anything else for our game is very simple: no. Everyone who works on Clashables is 100% aware of our stance and that there aren't any exceptions to the rule. We’ve taken some steps to protect the game and artists, like crediting art where it is used in our game, using proper planning to make sure there aren’t unreasonable deadlines to meet, and creative work being recorded as evidence of the creative process and human involvement.
However, we know that sometimes, people will try to get around our rules on AI use, and that can get missed when we check and approve their work. If and when that happens, we will investigate, and if AI has been used inappropriately, then we will correct the issue. In early versions of Clashables, two artists were found to have used generative AI in artwork that was later used on printed test cards and our website and social media. All the pieces they worked on were recommissioned to other artists over a short period of time, and replaced with human-made art.
